Student Assistance Program

http://www.sap.state.pa.us/

The Student Assistance Program (S.A.P) is a program mandated by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. S.A.P. teams exist in every secondary school in our state. At North Star, we have three separate teams- one located at the elementary school, one at the middle school and one at the senior high school.

Because North Star is devoted to the academic, physical, and emotional well-being of our students, we developed our Student Assistance Program. It is our endeavor to provide any assistance we can to ensure that our students get a sound foundation for life.

Reasons for Referral

Middle school and high school can be very stressful. Young adults are faced with many choices and new experiences. Often, life can seem overwhelming. Our Student Assistance Program can help students deal with many challenges such as those listed below:
Stress
Peer Pressure
Depression
Grief
Drug and Alcohol Use
Relationships
How to Make a Referral

Anyone concerned about a North Star School District student can refer him or her to the appropriate S.A.P. team. Our most frequent referral sources are from parents, grandparents, teachers, friends, coaches, guidance counselors, other relatives, school personnel, and community agencies. To make a referral to S.A.P., call the school at (814) 629-6651 and ask for a member of the S.A.P. team.
Confidentiality

The source of the referral ALWAYS remains completely confidential, as does the fact that the student has been referred. The only people who will know about a student's involvement with S.A.P. are the team members, including the local agency personnel, the student's parents or guardians, and the student.

Parent/guardian permission for a student's participation in S.A.P. is part of our process, but actual parent involvement in the program is necessary for its success.
