Apology to the members and families of the Class of 2009
In the seven years I have served as Superintendent of the North Star School District, I have never missed a graduation exercise. I have left after graduation for weddings and other family events a few times in the past, but I have never considered skipping graduation. This year was no different. I had a stress test scheduled for 7:30 AM on the first of June (graduation day.) Feeling this test would be as routine as my previous stress tests, I had no reservations about making it to graduation. However, little did I know what was in store for me? After I completed the test and was prepping to leave, complications set in. I ended up getting admitted to intensive care and had three stents implanted. I remained in the ICU until being discharged on Wednesday afternoon.
As you can see, missing graduation was not an option. I feel fortunate that I was at the hospital when my complications occurred. However, I do apologize to you that my health issues prevented me from taking part in your commencement. I do not view speaking at graduation and helping to hand out diplomas a duty, rather I feel it is a privilege and it is one I regret not being able to take part in. I congratulate the graduates and also wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. I also congratulate the parents and families of the members of the class of 2009 on a job well done.
Sincerely,
Dennis P. Leyman
